Is Murray ready to win Wimbledon 2009?

The Wimbledon Championship is underway in London. The most famous of all tennis tournaments will be played until 5th of July 2009. The Brits seem to have higher hopes than ever to see their home grown favorite lifting the big trophy. Andy Murray is considered 2nd favorite to win the tournament after the former World Number 1, Roger Federer.

Both Murray and Federer can benefit from Rafael Nadal’s absence. The Spaniard declared forfait to the 2009 edition of the Wimbledon Championship after suffering from stressing knee problems. This means that the title defender retired just before the start of the competition, leaving the Men’s draw wide open.

Andy Murray could become the first Brit in 73 years that wins the Wimbledon crown. The Scot seems more prepared as ever to grab his first Grand Slam title. Andy won the Queen’s tournament without dropping a set and placed a serious bid on this year’s grass court Grand Slam.

Murray started the tournament today against the American, Robert Kendrick. Andy did not have an easy opening match at the Center Court. He won after 4 sets and a spectacular encounter. Kendrick played his cards until the end and contributed to a nice show. He forced Murray to drop his first set on grass this season.

The Brit has created a general wave of optimism in the UK. It seems the first time in many years when a local has real chances of winning the trophy. Murray will get an important bonus in case he will win the Final. He will also become World Number 1 an achievement that seemed miles away, especially with Nadal’s impressive start of the season.
